Emma Tom - Journalist - Author - Musician. Australia
Writing Philosophy

Emma Tom has been assembling words on pages to pay the rent for about 19 years now. That’s a lot of years. In fact, when she thinks about it she feels lightheaded and has an overwhelming desire to distract herself with a mind-numbing DVD such as Jennifer Galardi’s Fat Burning Dance Party.

Emma Tom’s early journalism and fiction writing was kinda wild and in-your-face. There were lots of extreme words and Good-Lord sort of scenarios.

Her work was controversial. One time, a retired naval officer wrote accusing her of espousing unbridled licentiousness. Another time, a concerned parent said she was a disgustingly evil person who advocated fornication and was jeopardising the “puberty guidelines” she had laid down for her offspring".

Lots of people accuse Emma Tom of writing for shock value alone.

Here’s the thing, though. While the end result of her work is sometimes shocking, it is never her prime motivation for writing what she does. Emma Tom has always had a passionate desire to report on things that are taboo or ignored or not considered important enough for “real” journalists to look into.
One time Emma Tom celebrated Valentine’s Day by writing a long story about the goods and services available for the human vagina. She just couldn’t believe the rudest word in the English language was slang for what she knew for a fact was a very useful and enjoyable body part. Delightfully enough, The Australian newspaper actually agreed to print this story in its entirety. You can have a look at it by clicking HERE.

Another time she wrote about what it was really like behind the doors of brothel. You can read that story by clicking HERE.

Emma Tom is still writing about things she thinks need to be written about as a matter of urgency. It’s just that at the moment, there are less secondary sexual characteristics and more satire. She says this could change at any time.

If you click HERE , you can see one of the stories Emma Tom wrote recently about the best way to prepare yourself for a terrorist attack.

HERE’s a column on economic rationalism, and HERE'S one on abortion.
This last one generated a lot of e-mail - possibly more than any other column Emma Tom has ever written.
