Public Speaking

Emma Tom likes to talk. She’s spoken at arts and cultural events across Australia, as well as in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Jamaica. Debates she’s participated in include "Can Sex Save Your Life?" at the University of Sydney and "That Miranda Devine Should Be Bound and Gagged" (she insisted on arguing for the negative) on FBI radio. She’s delivered four major talks at the Art Gallery of NSW: "Picasso’s Women", "Caravaggio – A Rock and Roll Lifestyle", "The Bluffer’s Guide To Art" and "Pissarro 101". This is in addition to corporate work for a bunch of organisations and businesses including Westpac, The University of Melbourne, the NSW Equal Opportunity Practitioners Association and The Caxton Awards.

The Advertising Standards Board
Emma Tom has been a member of The Advertising Standards Board since May, 2003. This means that every month she sits down with the rest of the board and goes through a massive document full of written complaints from people who have taken exception to Australian advertising. What most people don’t understand about the ASB is that it can only uphold a complaint if it breaches one of a number of official codes. This is why writing in saying “that ad with all the undies makes me wanna throw up so get it off the air NOW” won’t necessarily get you anywhere. If you’re angry about advertising and you’d like some more information about the relevant codes, have a closer look at them HERE.
Lecturing, Teaching, Workshops and Tutoring
Emma Tom works as a casual lecturer at the University of Technology in Sydney teaching print feature writing to undergraduate and postgraduate students. She also runs numerous fiction writing and journalism workshops for school children, university students and interested grown ups. If you want to talk to Emma Tom about workshops or tutoring, e-mail her at info@emmatom.com.au .
